Steam excursions are by far the best. The route is excellent for true railroaders as well as for those that just want to see the sites. The entire route travels along three rivers, high bridges, a tunnel, and an incredibly steep grade.

We drove up from Charleston, SC for an overnight trip to ride The Polar Express with my husband, 4 year old daughter, 9 month old daughter and my parents. First, there were no restrooms with changing tables at the station. Of course I didn't expect they would on the train either so I had to return to my vehicle prior to leaving on the train to change my 9 month old. Second, we were told to arrive at the station no later than 4:15 and the train was to depart at 5:00. It must have been 5:15 when we finally left the station. Third, and most important since this is a train ride for children, they did not have booster seats/highchairs available at all. So, my 9 month old had to be shuffled back and forth between my husband and me. However, our 4 year old was impressed with the ride, despite having a cold and being fairly miserable (for her). She wondered why we didn't get off at the North Pole. I suppose that for us that was the most important thing. They take pictures of each child with Santa and offer it to you for a nominal fee of somewhere around $20 which is a bit expensive. We chose not to purchase one nor did our oldest daughter choose to have her photo taken with him. I'm sure this ride will improve over the next few years with more excitement surrounding the book and the movie. However, I would not take the dining train again. I would opt for the other Polar Express train ride without the dining car.
