The Western Maryland offers a nice ride through the mountains of Maryland. Trains depart from a restored station in downtown Cumberland. They offer steam and diesel excursions. The coaches are air conditioned for those hot summer days. Short layover in Frostburg which allows time to to eat lunch while the engine is turned on the turntable for the ride home.

Ride up to a 2.8% grade up the mountain from Cumberland to Frostburg. I reccomend the ride during fall foliage days but anytime with Steam is also good. Lots to keep you looking Horseshoe curve, loop back, Tunnel, and turn table at top are the best.

Had a great time back in 1998 and am going again this year. The train is turned by a turntable, which is very interesting! The coaches were climate controlled and very comfortable, and I got to go through my first tunnel! But hang on, because the train ride is pretty bumpy!

3 1/2 hours including 1 1/2 hour to tour Frostburg and watch the engine(GP 30 diesel and a 1916 Baldwin steam engine on weekends) on the turn table; Beautiful 1947 cherry wood FIRST CLASS car(good lunch catered by Holiday Inn) originally made for Coke Cola; other coaches are 1940's-early 1950's;

My wife and I looked forward to a nice trip on you train. WOW, were we disappointed. The trip, Oct 21, 2005, was so bad it verged on the disasterous. No heat in the cars. Jerky ride. Stalled on the track for over half an hour. No time to get anything to eat at the stop over. Over an hour late getting back to Cumberland.````I just wish you had given out 'rain check' tickets so that I could give them to someone I don't like.

The ride on this scenic railroad is exciting,fun and great for children. The Polar Express at night is a wonderful chance ``for children to live a dream, complete with``Santa and lots of steam. My family loved it.``

I WOULD ENCOURAGE EVERY TRAIN ENTHUSIAST TO TAKE THE CAB RIDE. IT WAS ONE OF THE MOST MEMORABLE EXPERIENCES OF MY LIFE. WORDS CANNOT DESCRIBE THE SIGHTS, SMELL AND SOUNDS. WELL WORTH THE PRICE.
