It's been a few years since I experienced this spectacle, but I'll try to remember the details. I certainly remember my disappointment. The book I saw it featured in showed a beautiful locomotive driving through the countryside. In reality, the train was more of a streetcar, the views were too urbanized--the tracks even run for some distance down the middle of a busy street, then give a great view of people's back yards--the terminal was a mob scene, getting tickets and getting on the train was a minor nightmare, they played jarringly loud music during the trip (and since it was drizzling out, we couldn't open the windows to lessen the sound), they started trying to sell us things as soon as we got underway, and the joker who was doing the selling apparently thought he and his antics were the main attraction. If you like touristy and classless mob scenes, go for it! But if you're looking for a peaceful outing that will give you a feel for the old Hawaiian cane trains, you can definitely skip this one.

This is a steam train in paradise. You can view the ocean from the whole route and the scenery is fantastic. It is a must for those who travel to Maui with children.
