I went for a dinner train. When we arrived I asked for information about the dinner train they lied. I traveled all that way up the mountain in a open car with black soot for a cookout in the middle of the rain. When we finally came down, the valley was dark and foggy, the railroad had closed. You get off the train find you car and go. You are in a place with very little tourist support. I live in WV if someone from out of state came and had problems they would be on their own.

Alot to do, clean facilities, great scenery, exciting trip, authentic locomotives! Two gripes: in the middle of nowhere and the ride is a little too long (five hours). There is a two hour one available, though.

2 Hours trip includes a 35 minute layover to tour a small logging town; steep 11% grade is uniquely climbed by use of switch backs; 5 covered & open air cars are pushed up; then at the switch back the five car consist is pulled up the mountain to 3100 feet; forest, 3 deer, 7 butterflies; historical commentary provided

Shays on the mountain...what could be better! This line ranks 'excellent' despite the fact that it is located in an area with very few accommodations. Cass offers two rides--to the top of the mountain for the true railroader and a shorter trip for everyone else. EXCELLENT!!!

Cass scenic railroad is probably the best Scenic railroad I have been to. The view from bald knob is amazing and the reconstructed logging camp at whittaker is amazing. Cass is home to the most Shay locomotives in the world and there were 3 running the day I was there and another steamed up on the siding. The Park employees are also friendly and knowledgeable. I cant wait to go back.
