My daughter and I took a Green Mountain Flyer round-trip excusrion from Bellows Falls NH to Chester VT (45 min trip). A early diesel (1000 hp) ALCO pulled a diner and 3 coaches including a 1913 restored first-class car. We paid the few dollars extra to ride the first-class car and it was worth it. This is the longest of the 3 routes offered by Green Mt. RR Co. and is also scheduled daily as opposed to weekends only. A short layover in Chesters allows a trip to the general store for take-out lunch and to watch the power get switched around to the back of the trainset. Apart from the excursions, this is a working RR as we realized when the daily manifest was tied down at Chester and let us get started on our return. The crew went and got sandwiches and nobody seemed to be in a rush. If you are in the area---check this out. The south terminal is the active Amtrak depot for the Vermonter.

The fall foliage and the covered bridges of Vermont make this a very nice trip. I feel that this line would be greatly enhanced by the addition of a steam locomotive.
