The theme of the museum is an operating small railroad locomotive facility typical of the 1940's, 50's and 60's. The museum is a 37 acre Western Pacific diesel shop that was used from 1954 until 1974. The property is leased by Union Pacific to the Feather River Rail Society. The site includes a 220 foot long, 16,000 square feet diesel locomotive shop and has two and a half miles of trackage. Unlike other museums, visitors to Portola are encouraged to climb up in the cabs of locomotives, to sit in the engineer's seats, and to browse through the many cabooses and passenger cars that are on display. Features the famous Run-A-Locomotive program.
