At last the rebirth of the railways in Weardale, from today 17/07/04 a 5 mile portion of the 18 mile route has been reopended. what an excellent start steam powered trains, for the summer. within two years the whole line will be open but for now, the 5 mile well satisfied my taste for the breathtaking seanery

My wife and I rode the newly reopened Weardale Railway from Wolsingham to Stanhope in Co Durham in the NE of England just six weeks after its return to operation. Superb - wonderful. Five miles (soon to be 18)with 7 coach train pulled by Peckett 0-6-0ST Mardy Monster and pushed by North Estern Railway 0-6-0 of Class P3. Excellent restoration at the stations, truly glorious green wooded countryside beside the rushing River Wear. Villages served are beautiful, immaculate stone built communities with good pubs and facilties. At £5 day return this line is superb and is already a major tourist attraction in this little known area.
