The Federation Line is planned to be a new and appealing way of making Canberra's major museum attractions more accessible to visitors - by linking them by a 'living museum', a vintage electric tramway. The tramway will run from the new National Museum of Australia to the Australian War Memorial. Seven kilometres long, the route will include numerous visitor attractions as well as the business, entertainment and accommodation heart of the national capital. The Federation Line will also be a major tourist attraction in its own right, representing Australia's tramway heritage by operating authentic, restored trams from all states.

The LVR was formed in 1974 and incorporated in 1977. The society’s aim is to restore, maintain and operate vintage trains.
Based at Cowra NSW, the society occupies the Locomotive Depot and Roundhouse, vacated by the State Rail Authority during the 1980s. It was opened in 1923, replacing the original depot located adjacent to Cowra Station. This depot was opened in 1886 when rail reached Cowra from Harden.
The current depot once boasted award winning gardens, which fell into disrepair during the 1970s. When closed by the SRA, the LVR immediately took over, since the LVR was occupying part of the complex. The gardens have been restored, and the LVR now houses the full collection of locomotives and rolling stock at the depot.

Historically the LoopLine was the busiest railway in Australia, hauling freight and firewood for the mines, wood for the many woodline companies, and over 9000 passengers per week. Up to sixty-one trains per day were required to meet the heavy traffic requirements, but this began to decline in the 1930's and by the 1960's, traffic on the LoopLine had largely ceased.
The LoopLine Tourist Railway is run predominately by volunteers, with a paid Manager overseeing the daily operation of the company.
The LoopLine tour is currently not running due to the railway line being relocated to Kalgoorlie.
